KADUNA STATE: LERE NATIVES STAND FIRM ON SOKAPU MEMBERSHIP, REJECT ATTEMPTS TO DISOWN HERITAGE

By Emmanuel Ande

The people of Lere Local Government Area in Kaduna State have reaffirmed their membership in the Southern Kaduna Peoples Union (SOKAPU) and their identification with Southern Kaduna. This declaration was made at a press conference on February 3, 2025.

Comrade Shuaib Ibrahim Umaru, Spokesman for the Concerned Natives, stated that Lere natives are part of Southern Kaduna, hence their participation in the Southern Kaduna Festival. “We are part and parcel of Southern Kaduna, and our participation in the Southern Kaduna Festival is a testament to our heritage,” Umaru said.

This declaration comes after a group, the Lere Local Government Unity Association Forum, questioned their affiliation with Southern Kaduna. However, the natives have maintained that their membership in SOKAPU is “sacrosanct and non-negotiable,” emphasizing that it is a matter of choice and a fundamental right.

Comrade Umaru stated that “Recall that on the 20th of January, 2025, we issued a press statement in response to a statement issued by one group called the Lere Local Government Unity Forum and signed by one Bar. Nasiru Bello Dambo and by one Mallam Nasiru Idris, in which they accused the organizers of the Southern Kaduna Cultural Festival (SKFEST) of referring to our elected leaders as being members of Southern Kaduna.

“However, on the 23rd of January, 2025, our national leader, Engr. SK Tabara, acted appropriately by coming out on behalf of SOKAPU to respond to the group. Today, we have come out again to reaffirm our earlier position and to state unequivocally and non-negotiably our membership of SOKAPU and Southern Kaduna, as nicely captured in our press statement.”

The Concerned Natives further stated that despite the statement from the Lere Local Government Unity Forum, their cultural affiliation with Southern Kaduna remains unshaken. According to the spokesman of the group, Bar. Dambo’s statement cannot remove the indigenous nature of Southern Kaduna from the people of Lere, Kajuru, Chikun, or Kaduna South.

“We are not surprised by the statement from the Lere Local Government Unity Forum, as it is a clear attempt to disown our heritage. However, we will not be swayed by external pressures to disown our heritage,” Umaru said.

The natives have also highlighted their historical and cultural ties to Southern Kaduna, citing the Nok civilization, which dates back over 500 years. “Our association with SOKAPU is a matter of the heart, and we will not be swayed by external pressures to disown our heritage,” Umaru emphasized.

In a related development, Yakubu J. Maigamo, President of the Akurmi National Development Council, has called for a boundary adjustment to reunite the Akurmi people with Southern Kaduna. According to Maigamo, the Akurmi ethnic group constitutes over 80 percent of Lere Local Government Area and was historically part of Southern Kaduna until a boundary readjustment moved them to the northern part of Kaduna.

Maigamo explained, “Initially, we—Kauru, Samina, Chikun, and other Local Government Areas at the time—were part of Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna, which is in Southern Kaduna. However, during a boundary readjustment, we were moved to Saminaka Local Government. Later, during the government of Dabo Lere, our name—Saminaka—was changed to Lere, which we are not happy about.”

He further stated, “Because of a power tussle, our name was changed from Saminaka to Lere. This name, Lere, is not ours nor does it represent our people. The name Lere originates from a place in Bauchi and was simply imposed on us. This is why we want our name to revert to Saminaka.”

Maigamo further appealed to the Federal Government to return the Akurmi people to Southern Kaduna, emphasizing that they have historically identified with the region. “We are calling on the Federal Government to correct the historical injustice that has been done to us. We want to be reunited with our brothers and sisters in Southern Kaduna,” Maigamo said.

By Adili Odeni

The Kaduna Peace and Unity Forum (KPUF) has launched a scathing attack on former Governor Nasir El-Rufai, criticizing his “fraudulent and destructive legacies” that have left Kaduna in a state of indebtedness ¹. The Forum’s statement comes after El-Rufai accused Governor Uba Sani of sycophancy and pandering to President Bola Tinubu for self-aggrandizement.

According to the Forum, El-Rufai’s comments are unwarranted, especially since Governor Uba Sani did not abuse or destroy his image during a recent TVC News interview. The Forum’s Chairman, Dr. David Bege Abraham, emphasized that Governor Uba Sani’s support for President Tinubu is “apt and right” in their view.

The Forum also highlighted the huge debt left by El-Rufai’s administration, which has made it challenging for Governor Uba Sani to raise funds for development. Despite these challenges, the Governor has been working tirelessly to ensure the gaps in the harsh economy are closed.

In a statement, the Forum expressed their commitment to peace and unity in Kaduna, stating that “what we want in Kaduna now is peace and unity and not political fights.” They urged El-Rufai to allow Governor Uba Sani to govern the state without interference and distractions.

The Kaduna Peace and Unity Forum’s defense of Governor Uba Sani is a testament to his commitment to providing security and development in the state. The Forum’s statement serves as a reminder that Governor Uba Sani’s priorities are focused on the well-being of the citizens, residents, and business people of Kaduna.

It is worth noting that El-Rufai’s recent comments on Governor Uba Sani have sparked widespread criticism, with many questioning his motives. The Kaduna Peace and Unity Forum’s statement is a clear indication that Governor Uba Sani has the support of the people.

As the debate surrounding El-Rufai’s comments continues, one thing is clear: Governor Uba Sani remains committed to his vision for Kaduna. The Kaduna Peace and Unity Forum’s defense of the Governor is a testament to his leadership and dedication to the people.

In the coming days, it will be interesting to see how El-Rufai responds to the criticism. One thing is certain, however: the people of Kaduna will continue to stand behind Governor Uba Sani.

The Kaduna Peace and Unity Forum’s statement has sparked a lively debate on social media, with many praising the Governor’s commitment to peace and unity.

As the people of Kaduna continue to rally behind Governor Uba Sani, it is clear that his leadership has brought a sense of hope and renewal to the state.

NNPCL: Northern Elders Groups Root for Bala Wunti as New NNPCL Boss

Coalition of Northern Elders across the three geopolitical zones today called on President Bola Tinubu to appoint the Chief Health, Safety and Environment Officer Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) Dr. Bala Wunti to succeed Engr. Mele Kyari, the outgoing Group Chief Executive Officer of the country’s oil company.

According to the Elders, the appointment of a Northern to succeed Kyari would no doubt clear the misgivings and impression that the President favours only people from the south, especially southwest for ‘juicy’ appointments.

“We strongly believe if Wunti from Bauchi State is appointed, the erroneous impressions about the lopsided appointments would disappear because the Northerners would celebrate the feat”. They said .

The elders, who made the appeal in a statement made available to journalist in Kaduna explained,”The decision to speak as elders is to douse tension and tell the President that north deserve rewards in form of appointments for the overwhelming support he enjoyed during the 2023 general elections.

The statement signed by Chairman of Coalition,Prof. Inuwa Wada Mohammed further stated:”We have carefully studied all Northerners within the oil and gas sector, and resolve to support Bala Wunti, a thoroughbred oil and gas industry professional with 30 years’ experience covering Technical, Commercial, Managerial and Executive roles across the oil and gas value chain.

“From records obtained,His leadership in various NNPC roles, from upstream investment management to gas policy reform, shows competence.

“Information gathered about revealed that he is qualified as graduate of Chemistry from Ahmadu Bello University,Moreso as an individual with a Master’s degree in Business Administration, his capacity to deliver is not in doubt.”

The Elders, who acknowledged his selfless commitment and hard work at his current and previous positions in NAPIMS, say President will the service of such oil and gas expert.

“Mele Kyari-led team, alongside Bala Wunti and others, has its name written in gold in the history of the Nigerian oil sector despite challenges and distractions within and outside the sector, therefore the President as head of Nigeria’s apex oil company has the power to decide on who takes over from Kyari.

“We urge Mr President to do this for us and he would assured of our full support in the forthcoming 2027 elections .”

Why we advocated more funding for NIMC, NYSC, others in 2025 budget proposal-Reps Dep Spokesman

The House of Representatives is pushing for adequate funding for some government agencies, over the proposed amount in the 2025 budget, the Deputy Spokesman of the House, Hon Philip Agbese, has said.

Ahead of the possible passage of the N49.70 trillion 2025 budget proposal this week by the National Assembly, the Benue State-born congressman disclosed that some agencies considered very critical to the nation’s socio-economic development have been penciled down for improved funding in the 2025 fiscal year.

While reiterating the commitment of the Speaker Tajudeen Abbas-led House to playing its part in birthing a new Nigeria; the lawmaker enjoined Nigerians to be hopeful, noting that the current hardship being felt across the country will soon give way to national prosperity.

He said, “We are making a case for improved funding for the National Identity Management Commission, the National Youth Service Corps and the Nigerian Defence Academy in the 2025 budget proposal. There are other agencies of government that are likely to benefit from this too.

“Yes, NIMC has become a very important agency of government in the past few years. A lot of Nigerians may not know how critical the agency is but we can’t talk about a national data bank without making and empowering that commission.

“They came up with a robust projection for 2025 but they can only deliver if they are empowered to train their staff members, and acquire the latest technological devices critical to the work they do. Without the NIMC, the war against terrorism will be difficult for the government and the security agencies.”

According to the All Progressives Congress lawmaker, the time has come for the reformation of the NYSC scheme, given its contribution to manpower needs of the nation in both the public and private sectors.

“The ideal of the NYSC must be sustained and this informed the decision to demand adequate funding of the corps. It is too early to disclose the amount we have agreed on but it is important to say that the National Assembly is not happy with the state of the NYSC. We need it to be better funded to meet the needs of corps members. During their service years; they gave a lot to the nation in a way that cannot be explained with ease,” he added.

He made a similar argument for the NDA, noting that “At a time terrorists continue to come up with new strategies despite the gallantry of our troops; we cannot but devise means to outwit them. One of the ways to do this is to improve the funding of the institutions charged with the mandate of building the capacity of our security personnel to tackle emerging security challenges.

“In all this, we also realized that the budget envelope system is not enough to meet the capital expenditure needs of most of these agencies. If you recall when the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle appeared before the House Committee on Defence to defend the ministry’s budget; one of the things he complained about was the paltry allocation of N50bn in the 2025 budget proposal. It is the same story for other agencies of government.”

He also noted that foreign missions deserve commendation for their services to the nation, adding that an upward review of their budget estimates has been agreed by the House.

Recall that in the 2025 Appropriation Bill, presented to the National Assembly on December 18, 2024, by President Bola Tinubu, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was allocated N66.88bn for capital expenditure and N286.88bn for recurrent (non-debt) expenditure.

Disturbed by the poor proposed allocation, the Chairman, House Committee on Foreign Affairs, Oluwole Oke told news men in January 2025 that “The needs assessment conducted by the ministry indicates they require N1.5tn.

“While the Federal Government may not be able to meet this in a single financial year, and in line with the Fiscal Responsibility Act and the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework approved by the parliament, the ministry and its missions should receive at least N500bn. We must also consider the impact of the unstable exchange rate.

“We have numerous obligations, including subscriptions to international organisations, passage allowances for Foreign Service Officers, and the United Nations General Assembly, among others.”

In the words of Agbese, “We have made a case for the missions because of the critical services they are rendering to Nigerians in other countries,” he said, pointing also that the parliament has been very impressed with the stewardship of the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo.

“The Aviation Ministry under the watch of Festus Keyamo has brought in a lot of reforms aimed at boosting the government’s revenue as well as improving our national image. We are prepared to improve on the funding of the Ministry in this year’s budget proposal.

That said, Mr Agbese urged Nigerians to stay optimistic in the New Year, noting that the Federal Government with the support of the National Assembly is working hard to make life enjoyable to the citizens within the shortest possible time.

Telecom Tariff: NLC Planned Protest Not In Public Interest, CSOs Tell Labour

The Coalition of Human Rights Monitoring Groups (CHRMG) has condemned the Nigeria Labour Congress’s (NLC) planned protest against the 50% telecom tariff increase, describing it as “misguided and not in the public interest.”

The CSOs said the tariff hike, approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), is a necessary measure to prevent the telecom sector from collapsing.

According to Dr. Gabriel Agibi, President of the group, with the current inflation rate at 34.8%, a nearly 300% increase from 8.5% in 2013, the tariff adjustment is essential to reflect economic realities.

Agibi said the NCC’s decision was made in good faith, taking into account ongoing industry reforms that will positively influence sustainability.

He added that the tariff hike is also crucial in ensuring that Nigeria’s telecom sector remains competitive with international standards.

“The last telecom tariff increase was in 2013 when Nigeria’s inflation rate was 8.5%. However, with the current inflation rate at 34.8%, a nearly 300% increase, the tariff adjustment is essential to reflect economic realities,” Agabi said.

“The NCC’s decision was made in good faith, taking into account ongoing industry reforms that will positively influence sustainability. The increase will remain within the tariff bands stipulated in the 2013 NCC Cost Study, ensuring that it does not unduly burden consumers.

“The tariff hike is also crucial in ensuring that Nigeria’s telecom sector remains competitive with international standards. Compared to other countries, Nigeria’s telecom tariffs are relatively low.

“For instance, in South Africa, the average cost of 1GB of data is around ₦1,200, while in Ghana, it is around ₦1,500. In Nigeria, the average cost of 1GB of data is around ₦500. The tariff hike will help to bridge this gap and ensure that telecom operators can invest in infrastructure and provide quality services to consumers.

“The tariff hike is also essential for the Nigerian government’s digital economy agenda, which aims to leverage technology to drive economic growth and development.

“With increased revenue from tariffs, telecom operators will be able to invest in expanding their networks, improving internet speeds, and developing new digital services, ultimately supporting the government’s efforts to create a more digital and connected society.”

The Coalition commended President Tinubu’s administration for its efforts to reform the telecom sector, ensuring its sustainability and growth.

Agabi said the President’s commitment to creating a conducive business environment is laudable, and the coalition believes that this tariff adjustment is a step in the right direction.

However, the Coalition of Human Rights Monitoring Groups urged the NLC to reconsider its stance and engage in constructive dialogue with the NCC and other stakeholders.

“We warn the NLC that its actions may have unintended consequences, including harming the very people it claims to represent,” Dr. Agibi said.

“We urge the NLC to prioritize the interests of Nigerian workers and citizens by supporting policies that promote economic growth and development.”

The coalition urged Nigerians to look beyond the short-term pains of the tariff hike and consider the long-term benefits it will bring to the telecom sector and the economy as a whole.

According to Agabi, a stronger and more sustainable telecom sector will create jobs, stimulate economic growth, and improve the overall quality of life for Nigerians.

NAN COMMENDS MATAWALLE FOR HIS COMMITMENT TO NATIONAL SECURITY

By Emmanuel Chukwuma

The Northern Awareness Network (NAN) has commended Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Muhammed Matawalle, for his commitment to national security and stability. According to NAN, Minister Matawalle’s actions demonstrate a strong resolve to protect Nigeria’s unity and promote peace and stability.

NAN Chairman, Abdulmalik Saidu, stated that Minister Matawalle’s response to criticisms was justifiable and essential for safeguarding Nigeria’s future. He emphasized that freedom of speech is not absolute and is limited when it incites violence, hatred, or poses a clear and present danger to national security.

The Northern Awareness Network argued that Minister Matawalle’s actions should be seen as a necessary assertion of governmental authority to maintain order and prevent potential chaos, rather than an attack on free speech. The group emphasized that Minister Matawalle’s response was not only justifiable but also essential for safeguarding Nigeria’s unity and stability.

By directly challenging those who might feel above the law, Matawalle sets a powerful precedent. NAN stated that Minister Matawalle’s response serves as a stark reminder that no one is exempt from accountability, regardless of their past political positions or influence.

The group emphasized that the government must show its commitment to upholding the rule of law by addressing any instance of incitement to violence. The Northern Awareness Network emphasized that addressing potentially destabilizing political statements is not a distraction from security concerns but a critical element in maintaining them.

Minister Matawalle’s actions can be viewed as proactive measures to prevent the escalation of political tensions into significant security threats. NAN noted that the concern extends beyond the actions of high-profile individuals.

The implication for the entire political landscape is immense. If those who have held positions of power resort to inciting violence or destabilizing rhetoric, what can be expected from ordinary citizens? The Northern Awareness Network emphasized that the potential for escalation is significant.

Therefore, it’s vital that a strong message be sent: opposition, while vital for a healthy democracy, must remain within the confines of the law and engage in constructive dialogue rather than inflammatory tactics. NAN stated that Minister Matawalle’s intervention serves as a critical step in establishing this precedent.

The Northern Awareness Network believes that criticisms of Minister Matawalle are fundamentally misplaced and misinformed. The condemnation lacks crucial context and oversimplifies a complex situation with significant potential consequences.

NAN emphasized that Minister Matawalle’s response should be seen not as an act of intimidation, but as a necessary assertion of governmental authority to maintain political stability and national security. Strong leadership necessitates decisive action, especially when dealing with issues that threaten national unity and security.

The Northern Awareness Network unequivocally supports Minister Matawalle and his commitment to upholding the rule of law and safeguarding Nigeria’s unity. His actions demonstrate the necessary firmness required to protect the nation from the dangers of unchecked inflammatory rhetoric and its potential for destabilization.

In conclusion, the Northern Awareness Network believes that Minister Matawalle’s actions are a step in the right direction towards maintaining peace and stability in Nigeria. The group urges all Nigerians to support the government’s efforts to promote national unity and security.

As the nation moves forward, it is essential to recognize the importance of responsible leadership and the need for decisive action in the face of adversity. The Northern Awareness Network remains committed to promoting the values of peace, justice, and national unity.

The group calls on all Nigerians to join hands in promoting peace and stability, rather than spreading hate and inflammatory rhetoric. By working together, Nigeria can overcome its challenges and achieve greatness.

AS MATAWALLE TAKES STAND AGAINST INCITING COMMENTS, AYCF APPLAUDS

By Abigail Peters

The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF) has expressed its full support for the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Mohammed Matawalle, in his recent warning against the use of inflammatory rhetoric, particularly when directed at prominent figures such as Rotimi Amaechi.

The AYCF believes that Matawalle’s actions signify a crucial step towards holding individuals accountable for their actions and maintaining the rule of law in the nation.

In a statement by its President General, Yerima Shettima, the AYCF averred that, in a time where political tensions are high and divisive rhetoric is prevalent, it is essential for leaders like Minister Matawalle to speak out against language that seeks to incite violence or destabilize the country.

“By condemning inflammatory rhetoric, Matawalle is sending a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated and that those who engage in it will face consequences. The AYCF commended Minister Matawalle for his bold stance and believes that his actions are in the best interest of the nation.

“It is imperative that leaders at all levels of government take a firm stand against any form of speech that could lead to violence or civil unrest. By upholding the rule of law and holding individuals accountable for their actions, we can work towards a more peaceful and united Nigeria.

“Nigeria, a nation of diverse ethnicities and political viewpoints, requires a delicate balance to maintain peace and stability. Recent pronouncements by Amaechi and other certain political figures have threatened this equilibrium, prompting concerns about incitement and the potential for widespread unrest.

“While healthy political discourse and opposition are essential for a thriving democracy, deliberate incitement to violence crosses an unacceptable line. The comments attributed to Rotimi Amaechi, intended to incite violence or unrest, are a serious threat to national security.

“Such actions undermine the democratic process, sow seeds of discord among citizens, and can lead to catastrophic consequences, including loss of life and property. Nigeria’s government, in its responsibility to protect its citizens, must not tolerate such deliberate attempts to incite chaos from any individual or group, irrespective of their political standing.

“The law must be applied equally to all. Minister Matawalle’s bold stance deserves commendation. His decision to publicly address the issue and call out individuals perceived to be inciting violence is a necessary and courageous act.

“It demonstrates a commitment to maintaining peace and upholding the principles of justice. By directly challenging those who might feel above the law, Matawalle sets a powerful precedent. His actions serve as a stark reminder that no one is exempt from accountability, regardless of their past political positions or influence.

“It sends a strong message that the government will not stand idly by while individuals deliberately fan the flames of discord. Such firm stance is crucial not only for maintaining immediate peace but also for setting a standard of responsible political conduct.

“Nigeria’s strength lies in its unity and diversity. This unity is threatened when individuals prioritize personal gain or political ambition over the well-being of the nation.

“The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum unequivocally supports Minister Matawalle’s call for calm and his firm stance against political incitement. We believe that his actions are not only necessary but also crucial for safeguarding the peace and stability of Nigeria”.

He emphasized that the government must show its commitment to upholding the rule of law by addressing any instance of incitement to violence, regardless of the perpetrator’s political standing.

“We urge all political actors to engage in responsible and peaceful discourse, prioritize national unity, and work together to build a better future for all Nigerians. The nation’s future hinges on our collective responsibility to maintain peace and uphold the principles of justice and fairness”.

Amaechi’s Attacks on Tinubu;Group expresses concern for no response

All Progressives Congress Support Vanguard(APCSV) has faulted the failure on side appointed aides to respond to former Minister of Transportation and former Rivers state governor, Rotimi Amaechi over alleged incitement of anarchy against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

According to the Support group, it is unfair for Party members, especially appointed aides to pretend not understand the implications of such vituperation from Amaechi and others in recent time with no response from them .

The APC Support Vanguard, which states this in a statement made available to journalists today, observed that, “Aside the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, who issued a warning to the former Minister of Transportation, over what he described as reckless and inciting statements regarding the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, we are yet to see other that rose in his defense of the Tinubu “.

In the statement signed by the Chairman , Abdullahi Mohammed Tofa , the group said the former Minister of Transportation warning that President Bola Tinubu will not relinquish power to the younger generation without resistance and pushing for alleged do-or-die election is dangerous to our existence as a people .

The statement further reads ,”For anyone to make public statements such as, “If you think Tinubu will just give you power, you are wasting your time”, is nothing but,an incitement. And seeing majority of his aides main sealed lips leave a lots to be worried about.

“We Recalled how same Amaechi in 2024 questioned the preparedness of President Bola Tinubu on the removal of the fuel subsidy and returning again in 2025 to say the political class, including President Bola Tinubu, would not willingly cede power to the younger generation.

“We are not against criticism of any sort, but let it be such that will be constructive and not overheat the polity .” It stated .

While noting that the aides can’t claim not to understand the erroneous signals being sent to the public and the subtle push for anarchy ahead of the 2027 general elections, the group said ,”As concerned support group, who are disturbed about the unwarranted attacks on Tinubu within the party hierarchy such as; Amaechi and Elrufai, we call on appointees ,the party structure and friends of the President to reply Amaechi immediately and put the records straight.”
