“Defending Nigeria’s Unity: Matawalle Stands Tall Against PDP’s Divisive Tactics”

By Ameh Enejo

The Northern Awareness Network (NAN) has thrown its weight behind Defence Minister Bello Mohammed Matawalle, amidst protests orchestrated by a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) under the guise of a non-existent group, the APC Akida.

According to NAN Chairman Salihu Suleiman, these protests are not only an affront to democratic processes but also an attempt to undermine the federal government’s efforts to address insecurity in the region. The protests, characterized by politically charged rhetoric, raise questions about the motivations behind them.

The APC Akida appears to be a phantom entity, lacking a clear mandate or representation, which raises concerns about the authenticity of the protests and the intentions of those orchestrating them.

Defence Minister Matawalle has been instrumental in ensuring national security and stability, particularly in Nigeria’s northern regions. NAN commends the federal troops’ bravery in the fight against insecurity and acknowledges President Tinubu’s leadership in fostering cooperation among security agencies.

NAN also appreciates Nigeria’s international partners for their invaluable support in the fight against insecurity. The organization urges Minister Matawalle and security forces to remain vigilant against emerging threats, particularly the rising menace of Lakurawa.

Key Challenges Facing Nigeria’s Security

  • Insecurity and Corruption: Nigeria’s security challenges are exacerbated by corruption, which undermines the government’s ability to provide basic services and ensure public safety.
  • Ethno-Religious Conflicts: The country’s complex ethnic and religious landscape has led to frequent conflicts, further destabilizing national security.
  • Porous Borders: Nigeria’s unsecured borders facilitate the influx of illegal weapons and militants, contributing to the country’s insecurity.

The Way Forward

To address these challenges, NAN calls on all stakeholders to unite in the fight against insecurity, rise above political machinations, and work collaboratively towards a safer and more prosperous Nigeria.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Wants FG To Crush  Terror Group LAKURAWA

Emiefele Odumegwu

Says Igbos in danger in N’West

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo, foremost socio-cultural organization representing the Igbo people, rises with urgent concern to address the alarming rise of a new terrorist group operating under the banner of “LAKURAWA” in the Northwest region of Nigeria—particularly in Kebbi and Sokoto States.

The Ohaneaze in a statement issued by the Secretary General Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro averred that the emergence of this group has rapidly escalated into a direct threat against the safety, dignity, and livelihood of our people, and it is imperative that we speak out unequivocally against this peril.

Isiguzoro said, recent reports detailing the activities of the LAKURAWA terrorist group are disheartening stressing that group has reportedly usurped the function of traditional rulers in Kebbi State, displacing them and assuming their roles as judges and arbiters of local disputes.

“This brazen act not only undermines the cultural and traditional frameworks of the communities but lays bare the harsh reality that many are now governed by fear rather than law. Traditional leaders, who have historically served as essential pillars of justice and community cohesion, now find themselves rendered powerless, operating under the thumb of an unrecognized and dangerous entity.

“The plight of Igbo communities in these regions is nothing short of grave. Reports indicate that the lives and properties of our people are under staunch threat; economic activities have waned significantly due to the constant harassment inflicted by LAKURAWA.

“Peaceful Igbo traders face robberies and violent assaults, resulting in the tragic loss of life—many among the 15 casualties reported in recent attacks. It is unconscionable that in a country where we cherish democratic values, our people are subjected to such brutal treatment.

“Moreover, the Governor of Kebbi State appears overwhelmed; his inability to assert control and safeguard the rights and security of his constituents can lead to a complete breakdown of law and order. In light of this untenable situation, we urge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to recognize the urgent need for comprehensive action.

“The President has endowed Ministers of State with imperative responsibilities, and we implore Dr. Bello Matawelle, the current Minister of State for Defence, to rise to the occasion and implement decisive measures to quell this rebellion against Nigerian residents, particularly against the Igbo in the Northwest.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo expressed implicit confidence in Dr. Matawelle’s capacity to address and neutralize this threat. His retention in the Cabinet is not merely a matter of political convenience but a demonstration of presidential trust in his abilities to manage national security challenges.

“We believe he possesses the acumen necessary to mobilize resources and execute strategies that will eradicate the Lakurawa menace before it solidifies into another multi-national terrorist group akin to Boko Haram.

“While it is accurate to note that Lakurawa currently lacks the level of sophistication and reach of Boko Haram, we cannot afford to underestimate the potential for escalation. The history of terrorism in Nigeria demonstrates that even nascent groups can grow rapidly into formidable foes if their activities are not curtailed immediately. This is not merely a call for action; it is a clarion call for the survival of our people and the preservation of peace in the affected regions.

“Additionally, we call upon President Tinubu to facilitate the immediate deployment of all necessary resources to aid Dr. Matawelle and National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, urging them to physically relocate to the Northwest to orchestrate a robust military response against the Lakurawa terrorist group. This decisive intervention is paramount in ensuring the safety of every Nigerian citizen as well as the integrity of our national security”.

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo says they stand resolute in their commitment to advocate for the safety and well-being of the Igbo people, adding that, ” It is our hope that the Federal Government acknowledges the gravity of this situation and acts with the urgency it demands. We will not sit idly by as terror groups attempt to disrupt the fragile peace that we have worked diligently to uphold. The time for action is now—let us unite in purpose against the scourge of terrorism” the statement reads.

Northern Business Professionals lists gains of Tax reforms

…Tells NASS to pass the Bill without delay

Northern Business Professionals have backed the proposed tax reform bills on grounds that the gains far outweighs the disadvantages and guarantee business development.

According to group , the tax reform bills are long awaited as they will help to stimulate the economy and establish a streamlined tax administration system; free multiple taxation and reshape Nigeria’s fiscal landscape aa well as drive economic growth and sustainability.

The President had on September 3, 2024 submitted four tax reform bills to the National Assembly for consideration, based on recommendations from the Presidential Committee on Fiscal and Tax Reforms, led by Taiwo Oyedele, to review existing tax laws.

In a press statement made available to Kaduna journalists today , the Northern Business Professionals said, there is no basis to entertain any fear about the bills. Adding” If anything, Nigerians will commend Tinubu for laying a solid foundation that will ensure the fiscal stability of the country.

In the statement signed by Mal. Abubakar Mustapha Kauru ,they gave assurance that ,”When Nigerians get to know the details of the documents, they will know that the president is working to bring relief to them and their businesses.”

While noting that multiplicity of taxes is one factor that has continued to impede efficiency in Nigeria’s tax system, with a negative impact, it stated that ,” The four executive bills seek to tidy up the fiscal policy and legislation environment in the country.

Adding,”These bills seek to translate the recommendations of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, chaired by Taiwo Oyedele, into an implementable legislative framework for the benefit of Nigerians.

“Though the transimission of the bills to National Assembly sparked debates in the polity about the purpose of the bills with some persons expressing fears that it might encapsulate proposals calling for a raise in tax rates in a way that will further burden the citizens.”

However it explained: “There a dire need to modernize the nation’s tax framework, the reforms in order to o consolidate tax structures, unify revenue collection, promote economic development, and provide for price transparency and monitoring of publication costs and fees.

“The greatest news is that the bills seek to offer a clear and concise legal framework for all taxes and reducing disputes, thus we urge the National Assembly to pass it without delay.”

Tax Reform Bills: Islamic Groups to Meet Wednesday To Take Stand

Amalgamation of Islamic groups under umbrella of Islamic Forum for Unity of the Ummah have concluded arrangements to meet on Wednesday to discuss the controversial Tax Reform Bills introduced by President Bola Tinubu-led administration.

According to the Islamic Forum, sensitive government policy, such as the proposed tax reforms needs wider consultations with stakeholders, groups and the citizens before been passed into law.

The President had, on September 3, transmitted four tax reform bills to the National Assembly for consideration.

But in a statement jointly signed by the Chairman, Mallam Adam Awwal Muhammad and Secretary Sheikh Akanbi Rashidi Bolaji, Islamic Forum for Unity of the Ummah expressed concerns over the rejection of the bills by northern governors and National Economic Council recommendation for withdrawal.

The statement further said ,”At the Meeting convened by Sheikh Mustapha Al-Arabi convener, members of Islamic groups are expected to discuss the content of bills with regards to interest and economic implications as well as benefits to Muslim communities across the country and take a stand.

It also hinted that the decision to meet over the controversial tax reform bills stemmed from the concerns raised in some quarters over the new derivation-based model for VAT distribution and the contents of the bills, which the northern governors claimed did not align with the interests of the North and other subnational entities.

While noting that the bills have not been presented for a second reading where the principles of the bills will be debated, it stated, “We don’t want to be Hoodwinked into accepting a tax reform the will affect our people and their economic wellbeing, thus our decision to meet and get informed knowledge about the reforms before taking a stand.

The Forum further said:”We have read the recommendations of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal and Tax Reforms headed by Taiwo Oyedele, for the review of existing tax laws.

“From the document read ,we observed that the bills are the Nigeria Tax Bills are expected to provide the fiscal framework for taxation in the country, and the Tax Administration Bill, which will provide a clear and concise legal framework for all taxes in the country and reduce disputes.

” We noticed it proposes several key changes, that include a gradual increase in Value Added Tax (VAT) from 7.5% to 15% by 2030 and an adjustment in Company Income Tax, which would set a rate of 27.5% for large companies, reducing to 25% by 2026.Additionally, the bill proposes a 4% development levy on companies to fund the Student Education Loan Fund, along with a 5% excise duty on sectors such as lottery, gaming, and telecommunications.
” We hope that the issues of transparency, particularly through provisions requiring price transparency and monitoring of publication costs are upheld” .

CERSDOV, UNFPA Complete 3-Day Advocacy Training for Women-Led Organisation On SRHS, Child Marriage, Others

By Ojo Sola

Centre for Study and Resolution of Domestic Violence (CERSDOV) has successfully completed a three-day advocacy methods and tools training for women-led Non-governmental organizations, focusing on Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHS), Child Marriage (CM), Gender Based Violence (GBV) and Gender Equality, powered by United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

The training, held from Wednesday to Friday, November 6-8, 2024, at CERSDOV Shelter, located at Ahmad Mohammed Makarfi Road, Hayin Dogo, Rigachikun in Igabi Local Government area of Kaduna State, brought together diverse Women-Led NGOs working at community levels.

Taking the participants through some of the sessions, Managing Director of CERSDOV, Prince Adefarakan Adedayo Yusufu, harped on the need for paradigm shift to policy implementation and strategies that will eradicate early marriage due to its many disadvantages to girls.

Early marriage and child marriage is any marriage carried out before the age of 18 years before the girl is physically and mentally mature.

He therefore called on the government at all levels, working with the National and States Assembly, to rise to the occasion and harmonize all laws necessary to ensure girls are protected against early marriage and other social vices that hinder their progress.

Speaking on the sideline of the training, Executive Director of CERSDOV, Prof. Hauwa’u Evelyn Yusuf, noted that, the training aimed at improving the capacity of women-led NGOs in Kaduna, Gombe and Akwa Ibom States, focusing on enhancing their advocacy method and tools so that they can better advocate on the advocacy that they are already into.

“We have taken them through sexual and gender based violence, sexual and reproductive health rights, child marriage and gender equality and equity, and our purpose for doing this is to enable them to reach out to communities, enlightening our ward on the need to give special attention to both the girls and the boys, to improve our ability to reduce or even curb gender based violence.

“Our partner, UNFPA has four pillars and one of them is gender equity and gender based violence. So, UNFPA is collaborating with us because at CERSDOV, one of our major pillars too is curbing sexual and gender based violence.

“This training is concurrently running in Kaduna, Gombe and Akwa Ibom States after which we are not just leaving the participants, we are going to follow them to communities where they work for advocacy and awareness creation on the need to curb these issues”, she said.

Reproductive Health Analyst, UNFPA in Kaduna, Dr. Elvis Evboreni, remarked that, his organization was working around sexual and reproductive health, women empowerment, gender equality among others.

“We are happy to collaborate with CERSDOV in this project, aiming at empowering communities.

“With this, we wish to develop a women focused organization in Kaduna State because there are social issues in this part of the country around family health that we need to join hands to address.

“We have been supporting the state in family planning, maternal health issues like child marriage which is hindering a lot of girls from realizing their potentials.

“So, we need to improve the environment we work to change the norm that will lead to inclusive environment – including persons with disability and this is why local NGOs working on these issues are key in making our communities safe for all”, he noted.

Programme Officer, UNFPA at Planning and Budget Commission, Kaduna, Jamilu Ladan hinted that, CERSDOV competed with several other organizations before being selected to lead this project.

“We will continue to do our best to ensure a well implemented project that gives everyone the the opportunity to realize their potentials in Kaduna State in line with the current administration of Governor Uba Sani”, he maintained.

Some of the participants at the training share their experiences, just as they promised to work collaboratively with one another to ensure the success of the project.

To Aisha Usman, “when I came in on the first day of this training, I was like, these are the things I knew but I don’t know how to talk about them in my community engagements.

“But now, I have a better understanding on how to approach the issues in such a way that the issues are reduced.

“Secondly, I always thought that persons with disability are only those on wheelchairs, not knowing that I am also one of them until I learned during this training that if I cannot read without glasses, I’m disabled. So, we will do more with this new knowledge”, she promised.

Another participant who is the Director Programmes, Arrida Relief Foundation, Shehu Umar noted that, “If we have three or four other persons doing what CERSDOV is doing in Kaduna, the humanitarian work will go far because many non-governmental organizations and community-based organizations don’t have the skills.

“So we have to support CERSDOV and I believe that after this training and subsequent engagements, we will have desired results”, he said.

A representative of Association of Persons with Physical Disability at the training, Aisha Salizu, thanked the organizers for including them in the training.

“I am very happy with the training CERSDOV conducted because they included persons with disability. The trading was helpful in what we do.

“So, I want to thank CERSDOV and UNFPA for showing significant interest in gender issues”, she said

Analysts say trainings like this are crucial because it ehances the skills and knowledge of women-led NGOs in advocating for SRHR, CM, GBV, and gender equality, enabling them to effectively address these issues.

It strengthens the capacity of women-led organizations to advocate for policy changes, influence decision-makers, and hold governments accountable for protecting women’s rights and fosters collaboration and networking among participants, creating a supportive community that shares best practices and resources among others.

Governor Lawal Faces Mounting Pressure to Address Insecurity in Zamfara”

By Suleiman Abbah

The escalating security crisis in Zamfara State, a northern Nigerian state plagued by violence and insecurity, has ignited a wave of public outcry, with prominent figures demanding decisive action from the state government. Among them is renowned Islamic scholar Professor Mansur Sokoto, whose scathing criticism of Governor Dauda Lawal’s handling of the crisis has resonated with the growing sense of frustration and despair felt by the people of Zamfara. Professor Sokoto’s call for action, rather than empty rhetoric, encapsulates the yearning for tangible solutions and a return to peace in a region teetering on the brink of chaos.
The severity of the crisis in Zamfara is undeniable. The relentless wave of banditry, kidnappings, and killings has claimed countless lives, leaving communities displaced and shattered. The state’s once-vibrant agricultural sector has been crippled, with farmers abandoning their fields for fear of attacks. The once bustling markets are now deserted, replaced by a pervasive sense of fear and insecurity. This dire situation has thrust Zamfara into a state of perpetual crisis, demanding urgent and effective intervention.
Professor Sokoto’s critique of Governor Lawal’s approach highlights the deep chasm between the pronouncements of the state government and the lived realities of the people. He accuses the Governor of prioritizing political rhetoric over concrete action, engaging in blame-shifting instead of taking responsibility for the crisis. While the Governor has made numerous public pronouncements promising to restore peace and security, Professor Sokoto argues that these pledges are little more than empty words devoid of substance. He contends that the Governor’s failure to implement tangible measures to address the root causes of the crisis only exacerbates the fear and insecurity plaguing the state.
The scholar’s call for action goes beyond mere criticism. It is a rallying cry for a fundamental shift in the state’s approach to the crisis. Professor Sokoto urges the Governor to move beyond the realm of political posturing and delve into the complexities of the situation. He demands a comprehensive strategy that addresses the underlying drivers of the violence, including poverty, unemployment, and lack of education, and seeks to foster inclusive development that empowers vulnerable communities.
Professor Sokoto’s condemnation, coming from a figure of such stature and respect within the Islamic community, reflects the growing public pressure on Governor Lawal to deliver on his promises. The people of Zamfara are not merely seeking words of comfort; they are yearning for tangible steps towards a safer future. Their desperation for change resonates in the scholar’s call for action, underscoring the need for a decisive shift from empty promises to concrete measures that tackle the crisis at its core.
The situation in Zamfara serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of inaction and the urgency of effective governance. Governor Lawal stands at a crossroads, faced with a stark choice: to continue with a strategy of rhetoric and empty promises, or to heed the call for action and embark on a path towards true peace and security. The fate of Zamfara, and the well-being of its people, hinges on the Governor’s decision. The echoes of Professor Sokoto’s call for action resonate not just within the state but across Nigeria, serving as a poignant reminder of the responsibility of leaders to prioritize the needs of their people over political expediency.

NNPCL: CSOs Pass Vote of Confidence on Mele Kyari’s Management, Says Recent Protest Meant To Disrupt Ongoing Reforms

Coalition of Civil Society Organisations under aegis Good Governance Initiative For Development (GGID) have dismissed the recent protest against Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) as a sponsored job to blackmail and descredit all efforts made to return the oil sector on right path of growth and development.

According bro the Coalition, the latest clamours for removal of Kyari, who has helped President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda score huge wins in the petroleum sector is unnecessary.

Recalled that Some groups had mobilized other civil society groups to shut down the National Assembly complex on Tuesday with the Kyari-Must-Go protest.

The anti-Kyari protesters are demanding the immediate resignation of the NNPCL boss by the Presiden Bola AhmedTinubu.

But in a statement by the Coordinator of the Good Governance Initiative For Development, Comrade Yunusa Kabir Mohammed, the group said the call for Kyari’s resignation is nothing short of a blackmail of the NNPC boss who has engineered efforts that have made products available to Nigerians.

“This is undoubtedly sponsored by mischief makers who were bent on discrediting President Tinubu’s petroleum reforms agenda for the benefit of the masses.” It added .

While describing the protest as a clear case of internal sabotage orchestrated by individuals that are threatened by Kyari’s success, it dismissed the accusations raised as baseless and motivated by corrupt interests seeking to undermine the significant progress made in the oil and gas sector.
The statement reads : “Kyari’s leadership has driven crucial reforms, such as the transition of NNPC into a limited liability company, enhancing its financial viability and operational efficiency. Noting his resolve to tackle oil theft through strategic partnerships with security agencies has contributed significantly to enhancing Nigeria’s revenue base.

“Why do we allow anyone sabotage kyari’s genuine commitment to creating sustainable downstream sector, despite the challenges of fixing the refineries and efforts that have made products available to Nigerians.

“We express disappointment in those who have sought to discredit management of NNPCL , suggesting that the calls for Kyari’s removal are orchestrated by individuals benefiting from the previous corrupt practices in the sector.

“We therefore urge President Bola Tinubu to reject their demands because the reforms Kyari has implemented are essential for the continued development of the sector and the nation’s economic stability.

“It is obvious that the motivations behind this protest seem deeply entrenched in personal interest rather than collective welfare. The protests are based on misleading narratives and serve to undermine the significant reforms Kyari has implemented.”

“We stand in firm support of Mele Kyari and appeal to the President not to yield to these unfounded demands,as the nation cannot afford to reverse the gains made in the oil sector.”

DHQ alerts on new Terror Group in N/West

By; PETER NOSAKHARE, Kaduna

Defence Headquarters Thursday alerted and confirmed the emergence of a new terrorists group known as ‘Lukarawas’, exacerbating insecurity in the northwestern part of Nigeria.

Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, made this known while discussing on a television news programme on the operations of the military.

Gen. Buba said that the new terror group emerged as a result of the coup in Republic of Niger which led to the breakdown of military cooperation between Nigeria and Niger.

“The terrorists began incursion into northern parts of Sokoto and Kebbi States from the Niger Republic and Mali axis, particularly after the coup in Niger Republic.

According to him, “before the coup, there were joint border operations with Nigerien security forces, which kept the terrorists at bay.”

“The terrorists took advantage of the gaps in cooperation between both countries and exploited difficult terrains to make incursions in remote areas in some North Western states to spread their ideology,” he said.

Buba said that the group was accommodated by the locals, who initially thought that the group meant well for them, adding that they failed to report the movement to the military and security agencies.

He gave assurance that troops had sustained intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) to degrade the terrorists.

“The terror group had continued to take advantage of the vast under-governed areas to hide and evade troops as well as harass the locals.”

According to him, Nigerian troops are locating them and eliminating the threat.

Vote NUJ National President on merits not Region…. Atunbi

By, PETER NOSAKHARE, Kaduna

Presidential Aspirant for the position of national president of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Dele Atunbi at his campaign visit to the NUJ Secretariat in Kaduna, Wednesday, while displaying his agenda for the union members condemned agitators for zoning the position to the north saying that the position of national president should be given on merit and not based on religional status.

He recommended that antecedence be used, past achievements and records of integrity be considered in choosing who takes the union to the next level.

According to him; “For me, my achievements as Secretary and Chairman of NUJ Ondo State Council stands me out as most qualified for the position. Even as Vice President of Zone B, I was able to bring sanity and professionalism to bare.”

“As for those calling for zoning, the NUJ should put the interest of members first, their welfare, safety and salaries and not that of where the candidates come from.”

He added that the preacher of zoning was impeached 9 months into his tenure, was unable to function for lack of focus. “We are coming to bring the union to the greatest of heights, reposition the body, make members respected, give safety, Journalists salary structure and insurance for all members.”

On what happens to veterans a question that was asked by Taudeen Ajibade, his response was apt, he said that the welfare of veterans was already included in the Constitution of the NUJ and stressed that as chairman of the Ondo State Council he made provisions for them.

“When I was in charge in Ondo, I made sure that veterans who had even stopped coming to the Secretariat for the way they were treated came back, we created a welfare package for them. Like we know their experience is important.”

He said that the position of national president be a transformational leader and not a transactional one. “Journalists are not to be referred to as beggars, they should be seen as those moulding the society for greater good.’
